Police have arrested a 25-year-old man over the burning of several copies of the Quran near a football field in Taman Bandar Senawang, Seremban, last Friday.
Negeri Sembilan police chief Alzafny Ahmad said the suspect was detained at a hotel in Chow Kit, Kuala Lumpur, at 9.30pm yesterday, following reports of the burning and the theft of Quran copies from a mosque in the area.
“Acting on information, police raided the hotel room and found two suitcases and a backpack containing 16 copies of the Quran,” he said, while another 36 copies were seized from the suspect’s family home in Senawang.
Free Malaysia Today reported the copies were believed to have been stolen from mosques and suraus around Chow Kit, while police are also investigating whether some came from a university in northern Malaysia.
The suspect, who has four previous criminal offences and completed a police supervision order two months ago, will be remanded for investigations under Sections 380 and 295 of the Penal Code for theft and defiling a sacred object with intent to insult a religion.

A male prisoner died after he was believed to have been beaten by three other inmates at a prison in Marang yesterday, Bernama reported.
ADSMarang district police chief Sofian Redzuan said police received a report of the case at 12.31pm yesterday, and the incident was believed to stem from an old debt and the three suspects’ dissatisfaction with the victim.
He said the 38-year-old victim from Terengganu was pronounced dead due to a ruptured spleen, believed to have been caused by blunt force trauma such as punches or kicks by three suspects aged between 21 and 35.
Sofian said the victim was taken to the Merchang Health Clinic for treatment, but was pronounced dead by a medical officer.
“The victim’s body was sent to the Forensic Department of Hospital Sultanah Nur Zahirah for a post-mortem,” he said, adding that the three suspects, also from Terengganu, had been detained for further investigation under Section 302 of the Penal Code.
The Consumers’ Association of Penang (CAP) has urged the state government and relevant authorities to investigate worsening coastal erosion and marine pollution at Tanjung Asam near Gertak Sanggul, Penang.
CAP president Mohideen Abdul Kader said a survey by the group found that erosion over the past year had caused trees to fall, damaged beach shelters, and altered the condition of the shoreline.

CAP also claimed stronger waves and rising sea levels had affected the main access road to the beach.
