Solve safety issues fast, says councillor

HIGH dengue cases, deteriorating roads, degraded road signs and overgrown roadside trees are among the issues raised by Kulai Municipal Council (MPKu) councillor Tan Hwee See that require urgent attention.

Tan, who oversees the Bandar Kulai zone, said the issues were among the most common complaints by residents.

“Dengue is a major concern as Kulai recorded the second-highest number of cases and hotspots in Johor.

“MPKu should strengthen collaboration with the Kulai district health office by intensifying public cleaning operations, monitoring residential areas more closely and carrying out regular fogging at high-risk locations to curb mosquito breeding,” she said during the council’s monthly full board meeting.

Tan also highlighted damaged road surfaces and poor street lighting, particularly near Ban San Temple and along Jalan Anggerik behind Mydin Kulai.

She said the roads should be repaired while additional LED street lights should be installed to improve visibility and enhance safety for motorists.

She also urged the council to replace faded and damaged road signs, especially along Jalan Ismail and Jalan Sultanah, saying unclear directional signs often cause motorists to miss junctions or make dangerous U-turns.

“Besides that, large, ageing trees along Jalan Durian have to be pruned as overgrown branches obstruct street lights and create dark stretches that pose a safety risk to residents.

“It is also hazardous for motorists during heavy rain and strong winds,” she said.

In response, MPKu president Mohd Hafiz Aliman said the council is working to minimise Aedes mosquito breeding sites through ongoing efforts.

He added that roads under the council’s jurisdiction are generally well maintained but assured that complaints would be attended to promptly.

“Many road signs in Kulai are old and need to be replaced.

“The council is also planning to repair, repaint and refurbish ageing public amenities, including shoplots, residential areas and bridges,” he said.

In addition, Mohd Hafiz said that MPKu is planning to develop a Tunku Mahkota Ismail Youth Centre in Indahpura to provide residents with a larger recreational space. - Star
