KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysian hockey legend Sarjit Singh died today after battling illness.

He was 63.

Regarded as one of the country's best national players, Sarjit contributed to Malaysian hockey as both a player and national coach.

He represented Malaysia at the 1984 Los Angeles and 1992 Barcelona Olympics.

He also won bronze medals at two Asian Games, in New Delhi in 1982 and Beijing in 1990.

Sarjit served as national coach from 2007 to 2008, and again from March 2024 to March 2026 .

He guided the national team to a fourth-place finish at the World Cup Qualifier in Ismailia, Egypt, in March.

Pakistan hockey player Ahmad Butt said: "Deeply saddened to hear about the passing of Sarjit Singh, a truly respected name in the hockey family.

"I still remember my first time playing league hockey in Malaysia, when you invited me and welcomed me with so much kindness, respect, and warmth.

"You always supported me on the field and encouraged me throughout my journey.

"I will always be grateful for the love and respect you showed me.

"Miss you, coach. Your contribution to hockey and the memories you left behind will never be forgotten." - NST
