Malaysia-Pakistan anti-drug accord; suspected horns seized at Penang airport

  • Home Minister Saifuddin Nasution Ismail said a proposed memorandum of understanding on narcotics cooperation would provide a more structured framework to strengthen existing collaboration between Malaysia and Pakistan in tackling drug threats.

Saifuddin (above) said the proposal was discussed during his visit to the Pakistan Anti-Narcotics Force headquarters in Islamabad yesterday, where he was briefed by its director-general, Abdul Moeed.

“Pakistan’s position, which directly faces drug flows from Afghanistan, makes cooperation with the country important for Malaysia, especially as trafficking routes extend to East Asia and Southeast Asia.

“We cannot address this threat only within national borders or the Asean region,” he said in a Facebook post during his two-day official visit to Islamabad, which began on Thursday.

  • The Border Control and Protection Agency foiled an attempt to smuggle 45 pieces of suspected animal horns worth an estimated RM5,000 at Penang International Airport in Bayan Lepas.

In a statement today, the agency said the wildlife goods were found on Thursday during an inspection of the luggage of an Indonesian man who arrived from Guangzhou, China, on a China Southern flight.

“The 57-year-old man was found to be carrying suspected wildlife goods without a permit or valid document under Section 68(1)(b) of Act 716,” it said.

The items were seized and handed to the Wildlife and National Parks Department for further investigation.

  • Fake cargo declarations and weak e-commerce controls are allowing large quantities of unregistered medicines and cosmetics to enter Malaysia, according to the Malaysian Pharmaceutical Society (MPS).

Free Malaysia Today reported that MPS president Amrahi Buang said smugglers concealed high-risk products in ordinary commercial cargo and used remote warehouses as transhipment hubs before distributing them locally.

He said illegal sellers were also using AI to create fake images and voices of doctors, as well as coded language to evade platform filters.

“They also frequently shut down old accounts or links and create new ones after being detected by the authorities,” he added.

Amrahi was responding to the Kelantan Health Department’s seizure of 584 products worth about RM60,000 from seven premises in Kota Bharu on Aug 19, including unregistered slimming products suspected of containing scheduled poisons.

School safety

  • The Selangor Islamic Religious Department (Jais) is drawing up measures to curb sexual misconduct in religious schools, including tighter screening of teachers.

Bernama reported Jais director Shahzihan Ahmad saying the department was discussing proposals with the School Registration Committee, including requiring teachers to undergo police background checks.

Jais was also considering stricter rules on teacher-student interactions, including greater segregation and restrictions on unsupervised meetings.

“Teachers, administrators, and other students must not do anything that should be avoided, such as giving special treatment or meeting at unusual hours.

“They should not hold meetings or memorisation sessions at quiet times or when there is no supervision,” he said in response to an ongoing police probe into an alleged sexual assault involving a teacher and student at a state religious school. - Mkini
