Khazanah-owned firm under probe; victims' family wants no leniency for Black Maria driver

Governance scrutiny

  • A company owned by sovereign wealth fund Khazanah Nasional is under investigation over governance concerns, with Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim stressing that no entity should be beyond scrutiny.

Anwar, who chairs Khazanah, said the issue had been raised at a meeting, after which the board agreed to investigate and determine whether there had been any governance breaches.

“There is apparently a company set up in 2012, which has questions raised over its governance… if there are violations, investigate,” The Straits Times quoted him as saying yesterday.

He said the probe was not aimed at revisiting past decisions simply to find those responsible, but at determining whether those decisions had consequences that continued to affect the country.

Anwar pointed to Tabung Haji and the Federal Land Development Authority, saying that financial losses arising from poor management could have repercussions long after the decisions that led to them were made.

Court

  • The family of three people killed in a crash involving an Immigration Department lorry in Jalan Sultan Ismail, Kuala Lumpur, on Wednesday wants the driver to be treated without bias or leniency after he was charged yesterday.

Shaik Firdaus Shaik Yahya, 53, and his daughters Siti Nor Sazlin, 25, and Siti Darwisyah Auni, 12, died at the scene after the lorry allegedly ran a red light and crashed into them. Firdaus’ wife, Norhayati Rozali, 55, survived and is receiving treatment in hospital.

The New Straits Times reported Norhayati’s brother Azlan Rozali as saying that the family wanted the case resolved swiftly and the driver, Akbar Zainol, should face appropriate punishment.

Yesterday, Akbar pleaded not guilty to five charges, including three counts of causing death by reckless or dangerous driving.

He added that the family is considering taking civil action against the accused and is still struggling to come to terms with the tragedy. - Mkini
