Perak Menteri Besar Saarani Mohamad has confirmed that his political secretary Hamidi Baharuddin resigned from the post effective Aug 17 for health reasons, but declined to speculate on allegations of drug abuse.
Commenting on the allegations circulating on social media, Saarani said he did not want to make any assumptions without evidence from the authorities.
“I also read that on social media. As long as there is no evidence from the authorities, whether the health department or the police, I do not want to make any assumptions,” he was quoted as saying by Sinar Harian.
Saarani said he received Hamidi’s resignation letter dated Aug 10, informing him of his decision and his need to undergo treatment.
“He (Hamidi) wrote to me on Aug 10 stating that he wanted to resign, effective Aug 17. So we accepted his resignation. He cited health reasons and said he needed time to seek treatment,” he said.

On Hamidi’s replacement, Saarani said it would take some time before a new appointment could be made.
Hamidi, 46, was appointed political secretary in 2023, replacing Bagan Serai Umno division chief Sham Mat Sahat, who did not continue in the role after serving since 2020.
The former Lenggong Umno Youth chief previously served as a special duties officer to the Perak menteri besar.
When Saarani was the state executive councillor for rural development, entrepreneurial development and cooperatives, Hamidi served as his special officer. - Mkini
