MACC says NFA in probe against ex-minister; Umno leader chides DAP over reforms push

Anti-corruption

  • The MACC has completed its corruption investigation into former minister Dr Xavier Jayakumar, with prosecutors deciding not to bring charges due to insufficient evidence.

In a statement today, the anti-graft agency, almost four years since the last reported update, said two investigation papers were opened against the former Kuala Langat MP in 2021 under Section 16(a)(A) of the MACC Act 2009.

“After investigations and a review of the relevant facts, documents, and evidence were carried out, the deputy public prosecutor decided to classify the cases as No Further Action in 2024 due to insufficient evidence to charge Xavier,” it said.

The clarification came after human rights activist Kua Kia Soong questioned the status of the probe, saying the lack of an explanation raised concerns over accountability.

Xavier, who recently rejoined PKR, was investigated after his close associate M A Thinagaran was arrested over suspected bribes linked to projects awarded by the Water, Land and Natural Resources Ministry in 2019.

Politics

  • Umno supreme council member Razlan Rafii slammed DAP for pushing Putrajaya to speed up reforms after they decided to remain in the federal government.

In a statement, the political aide to Deputy Prime Minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said the resolution by DAP’s annual congress on Sunday should be a clear message that the party supports the current government for stability.

“DAP must be disciplined as a partner in the government. After the congress, it should no longer make demands and must instead use the established channel for discussions, namely the cabinet.

“Speaking out publicly as ministers and demanding such things will give the impression that this government has an opposition within its own ranks,” Razlan said.

The Umno leader also reminded DAP that reform initiatives must be discussed through the established government process and there could be many implications if they are rushed.

Reforms

  • With the 16th general election now less than a year away, a group of NGOs led by Bersih have urged the government to expedite reforms to the Election Offences Act 1954.

Its chairperson, Faisal Abdul Aziz, told a press conference in Petaling Jaya today that the reforms must be carried out to ensure a cleaner, freer, and fairer election.

He said the existing rules need to be strengthened to set clear boundaries between genuine government activities and those that abuse public funds and machinery for political campaigning. - Mkini
