PETALING JAYA:
Selangor police seized about 600kg of drugs with an estimated street value of RM37.5 million in a series of raids in the first half of August.

Selangor police chief Shazeli Kahar said 12 suspects, aged between 22 and 54, were arrested. They included foreign nationals believed to have been recruited as drug mules, Utusan Malaysia reported.

“We believe these suspects were deceived by offers of lucrative jobs through WhatsApp and Telegram and were asked to carry luggage to certain countries.

“They received offers from unknown individuals to come to Malaysia. Some of them claimed they did not know the luggage contained drugs,” he said.

The raids, conducted between Aug 4 and 18, also uncovered a drug distribution network involving methamphetamine and heroin base in Ampang.

It is believed that the drugs, comprising cannabis (96.1kg), methamphetamine (408.6kg), heroin (87.9kg) and cocaine (7.7kg), were smuggled through Kuala Lumpur International Airport.

Shazeli said police also seized two vehicles and RM2,704 in cash.

He said three suspects have since been charged under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952, while two others were charged under Section 6(1)(c) of the Immigration Act 1959/63.

One suspect was released as there was insufficient evidence to establish his involvement in the syndicate. - FMT
