Woman's final kiss for son, granddaughters who died in Immigration lorry accident

KUALA LUMPUR: A mother's final kiss accompanied the late Shaik Mohd Firdaus Shaikh Yahya, 53, on his final journey after he died in an accident on Jalan Sultan Ismail here early this morning.

Firdaus and his two daughters, Siti Nor Sazlin Mohd Firdaus, 25, and Siti Darwisyah Auni Mohd Firdaus, 12, were killed in the accident.

His wife, who was injured, is currently receiving treatment in hospital.

A sombre atmosphere enveloped Masjid Jami'ul Ehsan in Setapak as Shaik Mohd Firdaus's mother, in her 80s, caressed the faces of her son and two grandchildren, and gave them a final farewell kiss.

The three bodies arrived at the mosque about 5.30pm. They were washed and shrouded before the 'solat jenazah' was performed after Maghrib.

Their bodies were then taken to the Kampung Air Hitam Labu Muslim cemetery in Kampar, Perak.

The funeral arrangements for all three victims, including transportation from the capital to the cemetery, were provided free of charge by charity organisation Pertubuhan Sentuhan Setia Kasih.

In the incident at about 1am, three of four family members were killed after being struck by an Immigration Department lorry that was on its way to pick up detainees during an operation in Chow Kit.

The truck allegedly ran a red light. A Proton Saga driven by a 50-year-old man failed to avoid the truck and crashed into it.

The impact led to the truck driver losing control and veering off course before hitting the family of four, who were crossing the road.

The truck also struck another car which had stopped at the intersection.

Police said the family were on a holiday in KL.

Police have completed the investigation papers and will submit them to the Attorney-General's Chambers tomorrow. - NST
