UMNO Youth chief Dr Akmal Saleh has stressed that he will not contest in the upcoming Melaka state election if cooperation between BN and PH continues.
He said his stance was based on defending his principles rather than holding office as an elected representative.
“UMNO is accused of being two-faced. UMNOU is accused of stabbing its friends in the back. Yet UMNO is also the party they seek.
“I reiterate my position during the KS podcast that if BN-PH work together in Melaka, I will not contest because I would rather uphold my principles than hold a position as an elected representative,” he said in a Facebook post today.
Akmal was referring to a statement by PH secretary-general Saifuddin Nasution Ismail earlier today, who said PH was open to discussions on working with BN to contest the Melaka state election.
He said the matter would be decided after Melaka Chief Minister Abd Rauf Yusoh returns to the country tomorrow.
Akmal also expressed his hope and confidence that Melaka’s political landscape could once again be fully dominated by BN, following the example set by its neighbouring states.
“God willing, we will turn Melaka blue like Johor and Negeri Sembilan,” he said.
The firm decision reflects his personal stance of placing his party’s political principles above retaining a position as a Member of Parliament or state representative.
His position is also expected to have implications for the political dynamics between parties within the governing coalition, as well as the future direction of BN’s cooperation with its partners.— Focus Malaysia
