Education policy

  • The Education Ministry is considering recognising students’ participation in co-curricular activities, including sports, at prison schools when assessing applications for university admission.

Minister Fadhlina Sidek said the move would help ensure students who complete the SPM while at prison institutions are not denied opportunities to pursue higher education after their release.

She also said students at prison schools had achieved a 100 percent SPM pass rate for two consecutive years, showing that their circumstances did not prevent them from succeeding academically.

Bernama quoted Fadhlina as saying the proposed recognition of co-curricular achievements was among several improvements being considered to ensure students could continue developing their education and skills beyond their time at prison institutions.

The ministry, she said, would also discuss with its technical and vocational education and training (TVET) division the possibility of issuing skills certificates to students who undergo vocational training while in prison. - Mkini
