PETALING JAYA:
The Sabah immigration department has repatriated 4,750 illegal immigrants of various nationalities to their respective countries so far this year.

In a statement today, it said Filipinos accounted for the highest number at 3,008, followed by Indonesians (1,478), Pakistanis (118), Chinese (109), Vietnamese (18) and 19 others of various nationalities, Bernama reported.

“The figure also includes the latest transfer programme involving 144 Indonesian nationals (today), transported via a commercial ferry,” it said.

They comprised 107 adult men, 26 adult women, four boys and seven girls.

All of them were from the Kota Kinabalu, Papar and Sandakan immigration detention depots. They were repatriated after completing their sentences for offences under various laws and after obtaining valid travel documents in lieu of a passport (SPLP).

On Tuesday, it was reported that Malaysia and the Philippines had discussed measures to expedite the repatriation of more than 5,000 undocumented Philippine migrants held at four immigration depots in Sabah.

Foreign minister Mohamad Hasan said screening by the Philippine embassy in Kuala Lumpur found over 1,000 Filipinos ready for immediate deportation by sea or other means.

“These detention centres can no longer accommodate such a high number of detainees,” he said following the 9th Malaysia-Philippines Joint Commission Meeting in Manila. - FMT
