Black Maria driver claims trial over fatal crash; committee to be set up to study UUCA replacement

Court

  • Immigration Department driver Akbar Zainol, 43, claimed trial at the Kuala Lumpur Magistrate’s Court to five charges over the Black Maria crash along Jalan Sultan Ismail that killed a father and his two daughters.

He faces three charges under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 for reckless driving resulting in the deaths of Shaik Firdaus Shaik Yahya, 52; Siti Norshazlin Shaik Firdaus, 24; and Siti Darwisyah Shaik Firdaus, 12, Free Malaysia Today reported.

Akbar was also charged under Section 43(1) of the same Act for careless and inconsiderate driving, resulting in injuries to Nor Hayati Rozali, 54.

The fifth charge, under Section 79(2) of the Road Transport Act 1987, is for running a red light and carries a fine of between RM300 and RM2,000.

Magistrate Aliaa Anwar fixed bail at RM60,000 for all five charges and ordered Akbar to report to the police every month. She also ordered Akbar’s driving licence to be suspended until the case ends.

UUCA

  • The Higher Education Ministry will establish an independent committee to examine and study all aspects involved in drafting a new law to replace the Universities and University Colleges Act (UUCA) 1971 (Act 30).

Minister Zambry Abd Kadir said establishing the committee was among the follow-up measures following the recent decision to repeal UUCA and replace it with a new law known as the One Higher Education Act.

“Second, we will conduct engagement sessions involving all stakeholders, and third, establish a group to develop the draft of the new law, and fourth, there must be a transition mechanism,” Bernama reported him saying.

Zambry reportedly said that an interim legal mechanism was also needed to ensure the process could continue while the government made decisions and put everything in order following the UUCA's repeal.

Security threat

  • Selangor MCA Youth has lodged a police report over death threats and threats to the life of a local influencer by several individuals believed to be foreign nationals.

In a statement, the wing claimed that the threats were linked to the influencer’s alleged exposure of undocumented migrant settlements, including the influx of Rohingya refugees, and suspicious activities around Puchong and Selangor.

It described the threats as a serious criminal offence that could endanger the influencer’s life and undermine public safety and order.

The group said the incident had also caused widespread concern among residents and netizens, and urged the authorities to take swift and firm action.

The youth wing also called on the police to investigate the threats under relevant laws, including Section 506 of the Penal Code and, where applicable, Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998. - Mkini
