KUALA LUMPUR: Former world champions Aaron Chia-Soh Wooi Yik moved to within one victory of a third World Championships medal on Thursday after Tee Kai Wun came down with food poisoning, forcing him and Man Wei Chong to concede a walkover in New Delhi.
National men's doubles coaching director Herry Iman Pierngadi confirmed that Kai Wun was unable to take to the court because of food poisoning.
"Kai Wun suffered food poisoning and started having a fever today. He was also having diarrhoea and couldn't recover in time," said national men's doubles coaching director Herry IP.
"It's unfortunate that they had to concede a walkover," he added.
The eagerly anticipated all-Malaysian last-16 clash at the Indira Gandhi Indoor Stadium therefore never got underway, with fourth seeds Aaron-Wooi Yik handed a direct passage into the quarter-finals.
The illness brought an unfortunate end to Wei Chong-Kai Wun's campaign after the reunited pair had impressed in reaching the third round.
For Aaron-Wooi Yik, the walkover keeps alive their pursuit of another medal at a tournament where they have enjoyed considerable success.
They created history by becoming Malaysia's first badminton world champions when they captured the men's doubles title in 2022 before adding bronze in 2023.
Aaron-Wooi Yik reached the quarter-finals again last year and are now one win away from securing their third World Championships medal.
They will face the winners of the clash between China's Hu Ke Yuan-Lin Xiang Yi and Denmark's 13th seeds Daniel Lundgaard-Mads Vestergaard for a place in the semi-finals. - NST
