Khazanah-owned firm under probe; victims' family wants no leniency for Black Maria driver

Governance scrutiny

  • Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim has ordered a comprehensive investigation into Xeraya Capital, a wholly owned subsidiary of Khazanah Nasional Bhd, to identify any potential financial irregularities.

Anwar, who is also Khazanah chairperson, reportedly said concerns over the governance of the company, which was established in 2012, were raised during a board meeting yesterday morning.

“Upon the board being made aware, I instructed the Khazanah management to initiate a forensic investigation to the highest standards of governance and due process and, where necessary, to bring in external authorities,” Bernama reported Anwar saying in a statement issued by Khazanah earlier.

Khazanah reportedly said that its board had raised several legacy issues requiring resolution, including those involving Xeraya Capital, which manages its life sciences investments. In July, the Xeraya board was reported to have identified irregularities in documentation relating to past transactions and decided to conduct a further review.

Anwar said firm action to uncover misconduct involving government-linked entities was necessary to ensure that losses did not ultimately come at the expense of the people.

Court

  • The family of three people killed in a crash involving an Immigration Department lorry in Jalan Sultan Ismail, Kuala Lumpur, on Wednesday wants the driver to be treated without bias or leniency after he was charged yesterday.

Shaik Firdaus Shaik Yahya, 53, and his daughters Siti Nor Sazlin, 25, and Siti Darwisyah Auni, 12, died at the scene after the lorry allegedly ran a red light and crashed into them. Firdaus’ wife, Norhayati Rozali, 55, survived and is receiving treatment in hospital.

The New Straits Times reported that Norhayati’s brother Azlan Rozali said the family wanted the case resolved swiftly and the driver, Akbar Zainol, to face appropriate punishment.

Yesterday, Akbar pleaded not guilty to five charges, including three counts of causing death by reckless or dangerous driving.

He added that the family is considering taking civil action against the accused and is still struggling to come to terms with the tragedy. - Mkini
