MACC collars senior Penang politician over RM1.96m land scandal

A deputy chairperson of a political party’s Penang chapter was among five individuals whom MACC arrested yesterday for allegedly abusing their authority in disposing of several pieces of land worth millions of ringgit that belonged to a government agency.

An MACC source confirmed the matter when contacted by Malaysiakini.

“The first suspect is a politician who is also the chairperson of a federal government agency. The individual is believed to have colluded with the four other suspects.

“At the time of the alleged offence in 2015, the suspect, as the deputy chairperson and a member of the agency’s board of directors, approved the sale of eight land plots in Seberang Prai Selatan to a company that allegedly belongs to his associate.

"This action has caused the agency, which is under a ministry, to sustain losses in the millions of ringgit.

"The suspect is also believed to have abused authority to approve the selling at prices lower than the market rate, causing losses estimated at RM1.96 million,” said the source.

Four-day remand

MACC chief commissioner Abdul Halim Aman confirmed the arrests, Bernama reported.

“The case is being investigated under Section 23 of the MACC Act,” he said.

Malaysiakini has reached out to the secretary-general of the political party, which is part of the federal government, for comment.

Earlier today, magistrate Noor Idayu Salim issued a four-day remand order against all the suspects.

Among the other suspects are two company directors, a technical manager and a clerk.

According to a source, the four men and one woman aged between 40 and 50 were arrested when they appeared at the Penang MACC office for questioning. - Mkini
