Maybe Taki thinks ROS is 'stupid' - Bersatu veep; Solehah no longer with IIUM

Politics

  • Bersatu vice-president Ahmad Faizal Azumu hit back at Perikatan Nasional secretary-general Takiyuddin Hassan for the latter’s comments on the party’s supreme council quorum issue.

Faizal said Takiyuddin (above) was expressing a personal view that seemed to be looking down on the Registrar of Societies (ROS).

“Maybe to him, the ROS is stupid and only he is smart,” the former Perak menteri besar told Malaysiakini.

He said Takiyuddin himself had admitted that the matter was an interpretation of the Bersatu constitution, which needed to be determined by the ROS.

Education

  • The International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM) said the controversial lecturer Solehah Yaacob no longer has any ties with the university, effective April 27.

It was reported that IIUM had established an inquiry panel to investigate her after she faced ridicule over her claims that the Romans had learned shipbuilding from the Malays.

The report by Berita Harian quoted a university statement distancing itself from Solehah but did not explain why she is no longer with the university or whether it was the result of disciplinary action.

Instead, it said, “IIUM hopes this clarification will avoid confusion, to safeguard integrity and academic scholarship.”

  • Schools in parts of Sarawak, which have been closed since Friday, will be allowed to reopen tomorrow as the haze conditions improve.

Sarawak Education Department previously ordered 509 primary and 82 secondary schools to close due to health concerns, affecting 197,323 students in 10 districts.

It told schools and district education offices to continue monitoring the situation and take precautions, including wearing masks, ensuring an adequate supply of drinking water, and closing schools if the Air Pollutant Index (API) reading in their area exceeds 200.

The decision to reopen was made based on API readings at 10am today. As of 1pm, nine out of 13 monitoring stations in Sarawak showed “moderate” air quality, while the remaining had “unhealthy” readings (API 101 to 200).

World

  • More than 50 attacks have taken place across Thailand’s restive south since last night, including bombings, burning of local government offices, and setting tyres alight.

Bernama reported that the Internal Security Operations Command Region 4 is monitoring the situation and has instructed all units to expedite investigations and step up security measures.

Three provinces were affected by the attacks, namely Narathiwat and Yala - which both share a border with Malaysia - and Pattani to the north of the other two affected areas. A curfew was also imposed in Narathiwat from 10.15pm last night (local time) until 5am this morning.

Kelantan police chief Yusoff Mamat said no Malaysians were affected by the attacks and urged them to postpone travel to southern Thailand. - FMT
