The state Education Department said schools must also close immediately when the API exceeds 200, in line with prevailing guidelines.
If the API surpasses 500, teachers and members of the implementing group will not be required to report to school, subject to existing regulations.
As of 9pm yesterday, Penang was among 28 locations recording unhealthy API levels.
"We are continuously monitoring haze conditions and API readings across Penang, with the safety, health and wellbeing of pupils and education personnel remaining its priority," the department told the New Straits Times.
It said schools and district education offices had been directed to monitor official readings from the Department of Environment (DoE) and remain alert to haze warnings and developments.
"Schools must ensure pupils have adequate drinking water, encourage sufficient water intake and minimise exposure to outdoor air.
"Particular attention should also be given to pupils with existing health problems or those showing signs of illness. Such pupils should be referred to nearby health facilities, with their parents or guardians informed," the department added.
The department also encouraged pupils and school personnel to wear face masks as a precaution.
Schools have been instructed to keep communication channels with parents and guardians operational so changes to school operations or haze-related directives can be conveyed promptly.
"Schools must report developments and measures taken to their respective district education offices and the state department to facilitate monitoring and coordination," it said.
Those concerned about their children's health because of haze should seek medical advice and inform the school.
"We will continue monitoring the situation and take immediate action based on API readings and directives from the authorities."
An API reading of 0 to 50 is categorised as good, 51 to 100 moderate, 101 to 200 unhealthy, 201 to 300 very unhealthy and above 300 hazardous. - NST
