The National Film Development Corporation Malaysia (Finas) will summon cinema operators, distributors, and film producers to probe claims of cartel activity in Malaysia’s film industry, its CEO Azmir Saifuddin Mutalib said.
He explained that Finas has yet to receive any formal complaints, but the move is a proactive step to gather information on the possibility of cross-chain dominance.
Finas is also considering requiring advance notification for the screening of foreign films, similar to Singapore’s system, Bernama reported him saying at an engagement session at the Finas Tower in Damansara today.
He said this is after Finas received a complaint from a local Tamil film producer over how the last-minute entry of a film from India allegedly disrupted his filming schedule.
The Seremban High Court has dismissed separate eviction applications by the Negeri Sembilan government seeking to evacuate the official halls and residences of the Undang Rembau and Undang Sungei Ujong.
According to the lawyers for the territorial chieftains, the court awarded costs of RM25,000 for each case and found that the matter should be pursued by the state land office under the National Land Code, as the wrong parties had been named and the properties were reserve land.
“The court does not decide whether the occupant is a trespasser or not, nor who (the property’s) legal owner is,” the lawyers, Emirul Sarifudin Nor Azmi and Choo Shi Jin, said in a statement today.
Selangor state assembly speaker Lau Weng San has advised Sungai Ramal assemblyperson Shafie Ngah to retract social media posts criticising the state government’s response to his questions on Universiti Selangor (Unisel).
Lau said Shafie’s posts contained inaccurate information and serious allegations that could damage the state assembly’s reputation, as the latter’s questions had in fact been addressed.

He added that the state assembly office had explained the matter to Shafie this evening, advising the latter to publish the full response he had received on social media.
The Malaysia Civil Defence Force (APM) said it takes the safety of its personnel seriously and is open to reviewing its procedures and activities.
The statement came after the agency came under public scrutiny following the death of Muazam Shah Kamardin, who was fatally bitten by a king cobra on Saturday while performing a public demonstration with the reptile.
According to Bernama, APM said the event at the Taman Temerloh Jaya Hall, Pahang, was carried out in accordance with its procedures and all its personnel have to undergo relevant training before being allowed to participate in operations.
As for the 39-year-old, it said Muazam has actively served the force since 2010 and has extensive experience in handling venomous animals. - Mkini
