The health ministry says Remy Laure Soothing Cream products are classified as medicines and must be registered with the Drug Control Authority.
The ministry said the revocation of the product’s notification by the ministry’s pharmaceutical services programme director meant that it could no longer be sold in Malaysia.
“Products containing this substance are classified as medicines and must be registered with the Drug Control Authority before they can be marketed.
“Medicines containing hydroquinone may only be used on the advice and under the supervision of healthcare professionals.
“Unsupervised use of these medicines may cause side effects, including unwanted changes in skin colour and skin hypersensitivity,” it said in a statement today.
The ministry said the sale and distribution of the cosmetic product contravened the Control of Drugs and Cosmetics Regulations 1984.
Under the regulations, individual offenders may be fined up to RM25,000, imprisoned for up to three years, or both, for a first offence.
For subsequent offences, they may be fined up to RM50,000, imprisoned for up to five years, or both.
Companies found guilty of an offence under the regulations may be fined up to RM50,000 for a first offence and up to RM100,000 for subsequent offences.
The ministry advised the public to stop using the product immediately and seek advice from a healthcare professional if they experience any discomfort or adverse effects.
The public was also encouraged to check the notification status of cosmetic products on the National Pharmaceutical Regulatory Agency’s website at www.npra.gov.my. - FMT
