Bukit Gelugor MP Ramkarpal Singh has maintained that the Security Offences (Special Measures) Act 2012 (Sosma) is draconian in nature, because it removes judicial oversight in detention and restricts bail in most cases, among other reasons.
“Furthermore, it is apparent that Sosma seems to be used on ordinary citizens or those involved in gang-related activities, and there have been instances where its use has been abused in the past, for instance when it was used to detain a 16-year-old girl in Kedah,” he said in a statement yesterday.
The DAP deputy secretary-general urged the government to give an update on a proposed bill to amend Sosma, which Home Minister Saifuddin Nasution Ismail previously said was in the works.
“The matter has been delayed for too long and requires urgent attention,” he said.
In a separate statement, Ramkarpal also called for an inquest into the death of a 14-year-old girl, whose mother claimed she was a victim of bullying.
“An inquest will also provide answers and closure to the family and to determine the victim’s cause of death,” he said. - Mkini
