Forget traditional flavours, nasi lemak mooncake is here to confuse your taste buds

 

THERE are some things in life that probably should never meet. Oil and water, pineapple and pizza, and now, apparently, nasi lemak and mooncake.

But with the Mid-Autumn Festival approaching, a restaurant in Pavilion Bukit Bintang has decided to bring these two worlds together in what can only be described as a culinary plot twist — a limited-edition nasi lemak mooncake.

Yes, a nasi lemak mooncake. Before anyone starts looking for the rice, there is one small problem. There isn’t any.

Instead, sitting proudly in the middle of a plate loaded with sambal and anchovies is a mooncake, looking rather confused about how it ended up at a nasi lemak party.

The mooncake itself comes filled with pandan lotus paste, salted egg yolk, pork floss and sambal, because apparently the traditional lotus paste and salted egg yolk combination was no longer adventurous enough.

And just when you thought things could not get any more interesting, the creation comes with fried pork belly coated in crispy shredded coconut. So, yes, this is very much a non-halal affair.

It is almost as if someone took the familiar components of nasi lemak, threw them into a culinary lucky draw, and decided that whatever came out would become a mooncake.

Naturally, Malaysians on social media had plenty to say about it. “Bro destroying both mooncake and nasi lemak together,” said wengyhoe.

Several others could be seen begging the creator of the nasi lemak mooncake to stop.

“Please stop follow the trend of destroying traditional food,” added terryaun while eugene.biz118 went straight to the point:

Some further lamented the fact that there was no rice in a dish that was supposed to have rice in it. 

But perhaps we should not judge too quickly. After all, Malaysian food has never been afraid of experimentations worthy of a Frankenstein movie. 

We have survived cheese on everything, durian in everything and now, apparently, nasi lemak in a mooncake.

The question now is not whether this creation tastes good. And if you are still looking for the rice, don’t worry.
