A PKR Youth National Day greeting banner in Setiawangsa, which had been placed over a Bersama billboard featuring former MP Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad, was removed today following criticism.
When contacted, Setiawangsa PKR Youth chief Rais Hamdan, whose image appeared on the banner, apologised for what he described as the wing’s “harsh” action.
“Setiawangsa PKR Youth wishes to apologise to the people of Setiawangsa for our harsh action. The banner has been taken down,” Rais told Malaysiakini.
However, he alleged that the Bersama billboard was erected without local council approval, and urged the Kuala Lumpur City Hall to take action.
The controversy surfaced yesterday after former PKR Youth vice-chief Prasanth Kumar Brakasam posted several images of the billboard and banner on social media.
Prasanth, who previously served as a special functions officer to Nik Nazmi when the latter was a minister, said such conduct was not the norm during his 13 years with PKR Youth.
“Differences in political views are normal. But going so far as taking such a stupid and immature action not only tarnishes PKR Youth’s image, but also shows how low the level of political thinking has become among certain quarters these days,” he said.
Prasanth, who is now a Bersama member, also urged PKR Youth chief Kamil Abdul Munim to reprimand those responsible.
Separately, PKR Youth vice-chief Nabil Halimi also apologised over the incident, saying such conduct did not reflect the healthy, mature and progressive political culture that the younger generation should embrace.
“I hope such actions will not recur, and we continue to build a political culture based on respect, manners and wisdom,” he said.
Nik Nazmi, a former PKR vice-president and two-term Setiawangsa MP, resigned from the seat to lead Bersama with former Pandan MP Rafizi Ramli. - Mkini
