Haze: Only Kangar, Langkawi stations show good air quality; Sarawak unhealthy

Only two of 68 Air Pollution Index (API) stations nationwide recorded good air quality this morning, as haze from open burning in Kalimantan and Sumatera blanketed parts of Peninsular Malaysia, Sabah and Sarawak.

According to the Environment Department's Environmental Quality Management System (MyEQMS) website, only the stations in Langkawi, Kedah and Kangar, Perlis recorded API below 50 as of 10.09am.

Two areas in Sarawak, namely Samarahan and Serian, recorded “very unhealthy” air quality of 235 and 211, respectively, while 10 other stations in the state showed the “unhealthy category” after recording API of between 146 and 197.

The areas are Sarikei, Kuching, Sibu, Sri Aman, Mukah, Samalaju, Miri (two stations), Bintulu, and Limbang.

Also showing “unhealthy” air quality are 31 stations across Selangor, Negeri Sembilan, Perak, Kuala Lumpur, Putrajaya, Sabah, Johor, Malacca, Labuan, Pahang and Penang.

The remaining 24 areas, meanwhile, showed moderate air quality with API readings between 59 and 98.

Govt ends Serian emergency

Meanwhile, the government has ended the emergency proclamation in the division of Serian in Sarawak following improvement in the air quality there.

According to a statement by the Prime Minister's Office today, the Yang di-Pertuan Agong has granted royal assent to end the proclamation of emergency as the air quality in Serian is no longer at a dangerous level.

The API reading in Serian had exceeded the 400 threshold when the emergency was declared at 8am on Friday, and continued to worsen to 515 as of 5pm the same day. - Mkini
