Sunway Lagoon coaster probe may take up to 4 months, say cops

 Selangor police chief Shazeli Kahar says police are gathering technical reports and statements to determine the cause of the Aug 22 incident.

The roller coaster incident at Sunway Lagoon on the night of Aug 22 involved 22 local and foreign visitors, aged between 11 and 44.

The investigation into the Aug 22 roller coaster incident at Sunway Lagoon that injured 10 visitors is expected to take at least three to four months, says Selangor police chief Shazeli Kahar.

“We estimate it may take three to four months for us to obtain the findings of the investigation. This is because we need technical reports from several agencies involved,” he told a press conference at the Selangor police contingent headquarters.

He said police were also working with the occupational safety and health department (DOSH), fire and rescue department, forensic teams, and other agencies to complete the investigation.

“Police have taken statements from the staff operating the ride, victims and medical officers,” he said.

The incident, which occurred at about 9pm, involved 22 local and foreign visitors, aged between 11 and 44. No deaths were reported.

Selangor DOSH previously said a preliminary investigation found that the roller coaster had operated normally before experiencing a “sliding failure” about 200m from the disembarkation point.

The malfunction triggered the ride’s automatic emergency braking system, causing it to stop abruptly.

As of Sept 2, all visitors who had received treatment and undergone observation at hospitals had been discharged. The roller coaster remains closed pending completion of the investigation. - FMT
