Activist flays Pua over 'mental illness' remark

Petaling Jaya Utara MP Tony Pua has been urged to assist in formulating policies that will help those suffering from mental illnesses, instead of using "mental illness" as an insult.
Prominent disabled and animal rights activist Anthony Thanasayan said mental illness is no laughing matter and Pua, as a lawmaker, should know better.
"Pua should be raising the plight of those who are suffering from mental illnesses in Parliament. They have difficulty finding jobs or living independently and are marginalised.
"Pua or his family members could become mentally ill one day. There is nothing to laugh about," he told Malaysiakini today.
Anthony, who once sat on the Petaling Jaya City Council, said Pua should use his position as an MP to make life better for those suffering from mental illnesses.
"Don't use their plight to make negative points about others," he said.

Yesterday, Pua (photo) had lashed out at Padang Besar MP Zahidi Zainul for suggesting that the catastrophic floods in Penang recently had to do with some groups insulting the religions of others.
Although Zahidi never named anyone, it was clear that his comments were aimed at DAP.
In view of this, Pua said only someone with mental problems would link disasters to religions.
"What is the meaning of a disaster in Kelantan? What is the meaning of a flood happening in Kuala Lumpur? There is absolutely no link (to religion).
"Those who link disasters to religion have mental problems. What they claim does not make sense," Pua told reporters.- Mkini
