AFTER CALLING MALAY STUDENTS ‘SLOW LEARNERS’, FORK-TONGUED KU NAN SAYS UMNO ‘THE BEST PARTY’

KUALA LUMPUR – Umno will focus on imprinting a winning mindset for the 14th general elections on all members at its annual general assembly next week, party secretary-general Datuk Seri Tengku Adnan Mansor said today.
“As this will be the last assembly before elections, all focus will go to preparation for the polls,” Tengku Adnan told a media briefing at the party headquarters here.
“We shall inculcate a winning spirit in everyone… we are the best party,” he added.
The Umno AGM will begin December 5 evening with a closed-door presidential briefing by its leader and Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak, and will continue with his deputy Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi officiating the Youth and Women wings assemblies later that same night.
Last week, party vice-president Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Hussein said majority of the motions selected for debate during the assembly are on issues surrounding Umno’s preparation for the polls.
Pundits predict Najib is likely to call for elections somewhere in the second quarter of next year, but the prime minister has up to June to decide before the current Dewan Rakyat term expires.
Some analysts believe the Umno president will go into elections much stronger even after the party was rocked by division triggered by the departure of former president Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad.
The fallout between the two leaders led Dr Mahathir to defect, along with thousands of the latter’s loyal followers but observers said Najib has managed to contain and deal with the split well.
Tengku Adnan said today that unity will be a key theme at this year’s assembly.
“There will be new programmes… it will help party members get to know each other better and get closer.
“We will also have an exhibition to display all of the party’s achievements from the past just to remind members of what we have done so they can feel proud,” he said.
The Umno annual general assembly is from December 5 to December 9. Up to 5,800 delegates are expected to attend the five-day meeting.
