Ambiga: Critics seeking to persecute me in Malaysia over UK suit

Ambiga Sreenevasan has accused her critics of attempting to persecute her with regard to Sarawak Report editor Clare Rewcastle-Brown naming her as the source for an article which suggested PAS received some RM90 million from Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak.
The former Bar Council chairperson said it was "highly unusual and irregular" for PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang's followers, allies and the media to attack her based on "two paragraphs" from Rewcastle-Brown's defence statement.
"(They) are seeking to conduct a mini-trial or persecution in Malaysia on the two paragraphs of the defence that mention my name.
"In the last few days, I have faced a barrage of attacks from ministers, party members and others aligned to the claimant (Hadi).
"The government media gave me a three-page coverage yesterday, including on the front page, where demands for me to 'come clean' were made. I was even on the TV3 news," she added in a statement today.
Hadi has filed a defamation suit in the UK against Rewcastle-Brown, who is based in London over the article.
Ambiga said that as Hadi had chosen to initiate proceedings in the UK, any requests for information must be made through UK courts.
"It is there that the responses to the serious allegations contained in the defence and counterclaim must be submitted.
"It is there that the trial will be held - In the UK, not in Malaysia," she added.
Ambiga warned that the "targeted acts of intimidation and harassment" she has been subjected were in contempt of the UK court that is hearing Hadi's suit against Rewcastle-Brown.
"As these acts may in one way or another be seen to be connected to the claimant, I believe he could be answerable to the UK court for them," she said.
She urged those who have been condemning her or any other aggrieved party to take matters to the UK court.
"I believe they may even intervene in those proceedings and become parties if they feel strongly enough and have a case to put forward," she said.- Mkini
