Bersatu Youth has taken offence at Umno secretary-general Tengku Adnan Tengku Mansor's suggestion that slow learners go to Universiti Teknologi Mara (Uitm).
"This is an insult to the thousands of students who study at Uitm," said Bersatu Youth chief Syed Saddiq Abdul Rahman in a statement today.
Tengku Adnan made the comment when emphasising Umno's contributions to students at the Anugerah Nadi Negara 2017 in Kuala Lumpur yesterday.
"You get to enter university, if slow learner, enter ITM (Uitm). Sometimes if you don't meet the point, it will also be reduced so you can enter university.
"On top of that, if you can't enter university in Malaysia, sometimes we send overseas.
"When (you) return, you act smart and scold Umno. How can? Please tell me. Why scold Umno? What did Umno do wrong?" said Tengku Adnan, better known as Ku Nan.
Syed Saddiq described the statement as "shallow" and should not come from a minister.
"The statement will negatively impact UiTM students and will result in worse discrimination against them," he said.
Syed Saddiq demanded that Tengku Adnan retract the statement.
He added that the university is ranked third in Malaysia under the Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) Graduate Employability Rankings 2018.
