SHAH ALAM: Nine Selangor Barisan Nasional (BN) assemblypersons today handed over a memorandum stating their support for Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah who reprimanded former premier Dr Mahathir Mohamad for allegedly insulting the descendants of the Bugis last month.
Selangor BN deputy chairman Mat Nadzari Ahmad Dahlan, who led the group to Istana Bukit Kayangan here, said the memorandum also urged Menteri Besar Mohamed Azmin Ali to state the stand of his administration towards Mahathir.
“We chose to submit a memorandum to protest against the action of the Selangor assembly which rejected our motion to debate Mahathir’s remark on the Bugis.
“This is a matter of importance because the Sultan of Selangor himself, as the head of state, had shown displeasure over the remark,” Kuang rep Abdul Shukur Idrus told reporters at the state legislative assembly.
According to him, the memorandum was received by the Sultan’s private secretary Mohamad Munir Bani who said the Sultan “valued highly the support for His Highness”.
The other assemblypersons in the group included Jakiran Jacomah, Hakimaton Saadiah Bohan, Shahrum Sharif, Budiman Mohd Zohdi, Rosni Sohar and Aminuddin Setro.
Yesterday, Selangor assembly Speaker Hannah Yeoh rejected the BN’s emergency motion to debate Mahathir’s remark, saying the house’s priority was to debate and pass the state budget for next year.
Azmin told reporters yesterday that the issue could be settled amicably without the involvement of the pro-Umno media.
Mahathir sparked the controversy while addressing the Pakatan Harapan’s anti-kleptocracy rally in Petaling Jaya on Oct 14, when he mocked Prime Minister Najib Razak as possibly a descendant of Bugis pirates.
The allegation apparently angered the Sultan of Selangor, who is himself a descendant of the Bugis people, and he called on the authorities to investigate the former prime minister for sedition. -FMT
