India will ask Malaysia to have controversial preacher Zakir Naik extradited, the Ministry of External Affairs said on Friday.
The ministry said in a statement that it would make Malaysia a formal request soon to have Naik, an Islamic televangelist who has been accused using his sermons to encourage people to take up extremism, sent back to India.
A doctor-turned-preacher from Mumbai, Naik came under intense scrutiny after some militants involved in an attack on a café in Dhaka in June last year said they were influenced by his speeches. Naik, who was in Haj at the time of the attack, refused to return to India when law enforcement agencies began investigating him, and remained untraceable until recently, when some news agencies reported that he was in Malaysia.
The National Investigation Agency filed a charge sheet against Naik last week in which they accused him of using his Peace TV speeches to urge youngsters to take up terrorism, as well as illegally raising money from militant groups for his activities.
Some militants laid siege on a café in Dhaka last year, taking hostages and killing at least 20 people, one of them Indian.
