A total of 89 marriages involving children under the age of 16 have been registered in Selangor since 2015.
According to a state assembly written reply, 29 such marriages were registered in 2015, 22 in 2016 and 38 until August this year.
The written reply was provided by Selangor Menteri Besar Mohamed Azmin Ali in response to a query by Lau Weng San (DAP-Kampung Tunku).
Lau had asked for the state government to furnish statistics on marriage involving children under the age of 16 and also those between 16 and 18.
For the latter category, however, the state government provided statistics for marriages involving those between the age of 16 and 20.
There were 1,615 marriages under this category in 2015, 1,487 in 2016 and 1,110 until August this year.
The written reply said that in accordance to Section 8 of the Islamic Family Law (State of Selangor) Enactment 2003, any girl under the age of 16 must apply to a syariah judge to marry.
A total of 321 such applications were approved between 2012 to 2016.
50 such marriages were approved in 2012, 64 in 2013, 56 in 2014, 85 in 2015 and 66 in 2016, the reply read.- Mkini
