ALOR SETAR: More people have been evacuated due to floods in Kedah.
As at 4pm today, 219 people had been moved to the relief centre at Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Changlun, up from 157 at about noon.
Kubang Pasu District Civil Defence Force officer Kamarulzaman Kasa said eight villages were affected by the floods: Kampung Belukar, Kampung Nang Mah, Kampung Changkat Setoi, Kampung Baru, Kampung Betong, Kampung Wang Perah, Kampung Paya Nongmi and Kampung Kubang Kayu.
Heavy rain from about 7pm yesterday had resulted in floods in the low-lying areas of the villages, he said in a statement.
The District Office, Social Welfare Department, Police, Fire and Rescue Department and Civil Defence Emergency Response Team-Community (CDERT-C) also helped with the evacuation, he added.
Meanwhile, a total of 93 people from 20 families had been evacuated to the flood relief centre at Sekolah Kebangsaan Sungai Serai in Hulu Langat, Selangor, by 2pm, according to the Civil Defence Force.
A spokesman said the latest evacuees were 27 people from six families from Kampung Sungai Serai, who were moved there yesterday. -FMT
