The organizers for the NCR Land Rally to be held on 13th November 2017 has expressed their urgent wish to the participants of this peaceful assembly to adhere to the various conditions set out by the authorities in ensuring the safety of the participants themselves and to also come in their capacity as indigenous people. In the same breath, the organizers urge all employers to release their workers on 13 November 2017 so that the indigenous workers are able to attend the assembly at the waterfront as a sign of support for their native employees.
“We have done all things necessary within our capacity to meet the requirements set out by the authorities. No children is allowed to attend the rally for their safety. No weapons or objects deemed to be weapons are permitted in the rally even if the natives come in their traditional ethnic costumes. No banner is allowed to display any name or logo of any political party, NGO or association. Neither are banners containing words condemning the court or expressing contempt of court are permitted. Please respect the rights of the Indigenous People (IP) communities who initiated this rally for the IP communities by the IP communities”, said Bill Jugah as one of the organizers.
“We do not wish the authorities to misconstrue this event aside from being a peaceful gathering for the indigenous communities to express their predicament. Let me remind all of us that this IP Red Rally is to voice our demand to self determination for our rights, Native Customary Rights, Pemakai Menoa and Pulau Galau. We cannot afford to give the power of the people and ownership of our land rights to political parties and government”, he added.
“This is a time to gauge the sentiments of Sarawakians. This is a time for all the people of Sarawak to come together irrespective of political leanings, ethnic differences and social standings. This is a time for the solidarity of the Indigenous People. Tomorrow is a day of Unity and Solidarity of all communities to tell the government that this is the voice of the people. Whoever is attending the rally tomorrow, please respect the rights of the indigenous people (IP) of the nation,” he further added passionately.
“Please bring your own drinking water and food. Also, more importantly bring your own trash bags for rubbish collection”, Bill ended the interview.
It is understood that there are an estimate of more than 100 volunteers assisting the police to ensure the rally runs smoothly and orderly.
