PETALING JAYA: A man was killed and his friend seriously injured after the pickup truck they were travelling in was hit by a train in Papar, Kota Kinabalu today.
Papar district police chief DSP Ladamah Sulaiman was reported by The Star Online as saying the driver Jumar Talib, 50, was pronounced dead at the Papar hospital.
His friend, Akob Tamsi, 50, was currently receiving treatment at the hospital.
Two others seated at the back jumped out of the truck to safety when they saw the fast-approaching train at 4.30pm, the news portal said.
The four were returning home after work.
The pickup truck was dragged along the tracks for 15 metres before the train was able to stop.
Accidents involving trains and other vehicles have regularly occurred in Sabah.
On Feb 28, three people were killed and four others, including an infant, injured when a train crashed into a van attempting to cross the tracks near Kampung Memanjang, Beaufort, about 100km from Kota Kinabalu.
The accident occurred during a downpour at 2.40pm. The train was carrying 20 passengers to the Pekan Beaufort station.
The train stopped only after 500 metres but not before completely pushing the van off the tracks. -FMT
