The opposition’s attempts to reject Budget 2018 are akin to disagreeing with the federal government’s efforts to help the flood victims in Penang, Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Shahidan Kassim told the Dewan Rakyat.
This was how the Umno minister interpreted the opposition’s attempt to reject Budget 2018, which passed its second reading via bloc voting yesterday.
Shahidan was responding to Sim Tze Tzin (PKR-Bayan Baru) who had asked whether the government plans to allocate RM2 billion from its contingency fund to Penang.
“You’ve asked for the contingency fund, but why you did not support the budget then? Not only did you oppose the budget, but you also mooted bloc voting,” he asked Sim.
“I regret that the opposition lawmakers rejected the budget, which included (the federal government’s effort) in assisting the victims.
“These flood victims do not get the support from the opposition,” Shahidan said during the minister’s Question Time.
Impact of development projects
Earlier, Shabudin Yahaya (BN-Tasek Gelugor) asked about other possible causes of the Penang floods, besides the unusual downpour and tidal phenomena.
“The phenomenon has taken place in other states but the effects of the floods were not as bad as those experienced in Penang,” said Shabudin.
In his reply, Shahidan cited prayers verse 41 of Surah Ar-Rum and verse 182 of Surah Ali-Imran of the Quran.
“That is what your hands have put forth and because Allah is not ever unjust to [His] servants,” he said, citing verse 182 of Surah Ali-Imran.
“Mischief has appeared in the land and the sea because of what the hands of the mankind have earned, that He may make them taste a part of that which they have done, so that they may return (turn to Allah),” he said, citing verse 41 of Surah Ar-Rum.
He then said that the development projects planned after 2008, when the opposition took power in Penang, had destroyed the ecosystem and ecology of the state.
