State executive councillor Dr Afif Bahardin questioned the source of funding to Kelab Putera 1Malaysia, which has been distributing aid in several large containers in Penang, several days after the big floods ended on Nov 5.
Afif said he was not questioning the intentions of the pro-government club nor was he ridiculing their efforts to aid flood victims in Penang.
"In fact, I welcome the effort to help Penangites, no matter who they are.
"But I'm questioning the funding to this organisation in view of Putrajaya not sending us any funds for the floods," he said in a press conference at the State Assembly lobby today.
"Where does the money come from? They bring household items like pillows and mattresses with Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak's photo on them in large containers.
"Such donations should be directed to the welfare department," said the PKR's Seberang Jaya assemblyperson.
A total of 40 containers arrived at the district office in Seberang Perai recently, containing mattresses, pillows, blankets, hygiene kits, sanitary pads, infant formulas, food, mats and tents, among others.
Kelab Putera 1Malaysia president Abdul Azeez Rahim was quoted in the media as saying that it had mobilised a team of 500 young volunteers to help in the massive cleaning up exercise.
Afif said many NGOs have offered their help but Kelab Putra 1Malaysia seem to be the largest donor.
"I'm not blaming the welfare department. I'm just wondering where their funds came from. Could be an Arab donor?" Afif asked.
He was clearly hinting at Najib who had insisted that the RM2.6 billion in his personal bank accounts was a donation from the Saudi royalty.- Mkini
