Selangor may buy electric cars for its officials

S'GOR DUN | The Selangor cabinet might replace its present fleet of vehicles with electric cars in the future.
State executive councillor Elizabeth Wong said this was necessary to reduce the overall carbon footprint.
However, the cars now in use are not scheduled for replacement yet, said Wong (PKR-Bukit Lanjan), the exco member in charge of tourism, environment, green technology and consumer affairs.
"For now, it is not (yet) time to acquire new official cars," Wong told the legislative assembly during question time.
In 2008, the Selangor government bought a fleet of Toyota Camry cars for the 10 state exco members to replace the fleet of Proton Perdana cars, due to cheaper maintenance costs.
The Selangor and Perak governments were the first to ditch Proton in favour of a foreign make. Following this, Terengganu, Negeri Sembilan and the federal government followed suit.
Meanwhile, Wong said the Selangor government would continue to pursue its green technology action plan for 2016-2018, which, among others, involves the installation of charging stations for electric cars.
Currently, such services are available in 88 locations in Selangor, she said.
She said another 33 initiatives, which would cost RM1.37 million, involved the installation of solar panels, rainwater collection efforts and the creation of bicycle lanes, among others.
Wong was responding to Yaacob Sapari (PKR-Kota Anggerik) who asked for details of Selangor's efforts to turn the state into a "low carbon city". -Mkini
