KUALA LUMPUR – High winds and heavy rains have left a massive trail of destruction across Penang even as the Meteorological Department issues a “red” alert warning of continuous heavy rainfall across the northwest island state and Kedah on the mainland.
State Welfare, Caring Society and Environment Committee chairman Phee Boon Poh said two people were reported to have died so far.
Mature trees in the inner city of George Town and outlying areas on the island as well as in Seberang Perai have been uprooted by the storm that started lashing the state yesterday 2pm.
Penang northeast district police later confirmed the two fatalities. In a statement, the police said the first death was of a 75-year-old Indian Muslim man who was found to have drowned at home in Jalan Perak while the second death was of an ethnic Chinese woman, age undisclosed, found at a senior citizens’ home in Jalan P. Ramlee.
Access to Penang Road, Chulia Street, Scotland Road are currently closed due to fallen trees while council workers are clearing up the debris.
Cecil Street, Macalister Lane, Lorong Bertam, the junction of Kimberley Street, Jalan Sungai Ujong, Jalan Datuk Keramat, the junction of Carnavon Street and Lebuh Melayu, Beach Street, the junction of Macalister Road and Masjid Pakistan, and Jalan Veterina are all still flooded.
A ferry that ran aground following the storm in Butterworth.In Tanjung Bungah on the island’s north, photos taken earlier this morning show a section of a caved-in road behind Surin Condominium, in an up-and-coming residential neighbourhood in Chee Seng Gardens. The retaining wall has also fallen down, trapping water.
“The Tanjung Bungah site is a new development, the houses are new and vacant so no injuries reported,” Phee added when asked.
Social media pictures also show a ferry thrown against the side of the pier in Butterworth and a flooded tunnel in Seberang Jaya on the mainland.
