Gale-force winds and heavy rain lashed the north-western coast of the peninsula since yesterday, causing severe floods in Penang, Kedah and Perak.
Penang took the brunt of the bad weather, and suffered four dead and almost 3,000 evacuated, damage to buildings, uprooted trees and flooded homes.
In Kedah, 1,906 victims from 529 families were moved to safe areas as of 4pm, while Perak saw 103 people from 21 families moved to shelters in Perak Tengah.
The military moved into Penang after Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng called Deputy Prime Minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi at 3.45am to seek federal assistance.
