Police will beef up the Special Action Unit (UTK) personnel for Pakatan Harapan chairperson Dr Mahathir Mohamad if the need arises, said the police chief today.
Inspector-general of police Mohamad Fuzi Harun reiterated that the bodyguard service provided by the UTK to Mahathir was only scaled down.
"It depends on the threat. If we think there is a serious threat against him, we will beef up the number of personnel and provide the necessary security.
"Currently, even his wife has a female UTK officer attached to her (and we also) monitor his home," Fuzi (photo) told a press conference at the UTK training centre in Cheras today.
Fuzi, last week, denied that police have withdrawn Mahathir's UTK personnel.
He explained that services from the UTK for Mahathir were still in place, but several bodyguards from the regular police force were instructed to report back for duty with the Royal Malaysian Police.
Mahathir had earlier claimed that the services of the UTK for his protection were withdrawn.
Last year, the former premier's police outriders were also withdrawn. Then IGP Khalid Abu Bakar had said the decision was due to Mahathir's involvement in "anti-government events".- Mkini
