KUALA LUMPUR: Activist Haris Ibrahim today escaped his eight-month jail sentence for making seditious statements in a post-election forum five years ago with the High Court here replacing the prison term with a RM4,000 fine.
However, Justice Azman Abdullah maintained his conviction under Section 4(1)(b) of the Sedition Act.
In his judgment, Azman said the Sessions Court had not made an error in its findings.
“The conviction is safe and there is no miscarriage of justice,” he added.
Haris was given an eight-month jail sentence by the Sessions Court here on April 14, 2016, for making seditious statements in a forum at the Kuala Lumpur and Selangor Chinese Assembly Hall on May 13, 2013.
He and four others – activists Adam Adli, Safwan Anang and Hishamuddin Rais, and Batu MP Tian Chua – who were speakers at the forum claimed trial to the sedition charges.
The statements were made a week after the 13th general election, amid claims that Barisan Nasional had won the polls through unfair means.
Safwan and Adam were freed from their charges at the Court of Appeal in 2016 and this year respectively.
However, Tian Chua was given a three-month jail sentence and fined RM1,800 in 2016 while Hishamuddin was fined RM5,000 by the Court of Appeal. - Mkini
