Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Azalina Othman Said has expressed “shock” over Bersatu leaders not being aware of procedures, which resulted in the party being provisionally deregistered by the Registrar of Societies (ROS).
She said this is because the party’s leadership is filled with senior politicians including a former prime minister, and they ought to know how to follow procedures.
“I’m quite shocked because (Bersatu) comprises a former cabinet minister, politicians who have held office, and even those who had been a former prime minister.
“I’m shocked that they don’t know legal procedures. They ought to know this,” she told reporters when met in the parliament complex today when asked to comment on the issue.
She added, “I’m as shocked as reporters and members of the public – what were they thinking? Did their secretary general keep mum? Or their executive secretary?
“I don’t know, but I’m saddened. It couldn’t be that they don’t have lawyers to advise them.”
Earlier today, the ROS slapped Bersatu with a provisional dissolution order under Section 14(5) of the Societies Act, effective today.
This is due to issues regarding its annual general meeting last December, which was held at the national level without its divisions and branches having done so beforehand.
Bersatu president Muhyiddin Yassin explained that Bersatu's constitution had stipulated that branches only need to hold AGMs a year after they were formed, but the ROS rejected this as the Bersatu leader’s “personal interpretation”.
Bersatu now has 30 days to appeal, failing which they would be permanently deregistered. - Mkini
