Bersatu to field ex-EC chief Abdul Rashid in Putrajaya

GE14 | Former Election Commission chief commissioner Abdul Rashid Abdul Rahman (above) is to be selected as Bersatu's candidate to contest the nation's administrative capital of Putrajaya in the coming 14th general election.
According to party sources, the Abdul Rashid, who is Bersatu vice- president's, was confirmed as the candidate during a meeting last week and this is to be announced by the party president Muhyiddin Yassin on Sunday.
"It's confirmed for Wilayah Persekutuan (Federal Territories). Ninety-five percent of the Bersatu list of candidates is ready and will be announced this Sunday," the source told Malaysiakini.
Malaysiakini understands three other names were nominated for the Putrajaya seat apart from Abdul Rashid's.
They were Putrajaya Bersatu division chief Hasnul Hadi, Wangsa Maju division chief Ahmad Tamby Kadi and academician Samsu Adabi Mamat.
Previously, Bersatu chairperson Dr Mahathir Mohamad's name had been teased as the party's Putrajaya candidate. However, it has since been confirmed that the ex-premier will contest Langkawi.
Abdul Rashid will be facing the Umno incumbent Tengku Adnan Mansor (above) who is also caretaker federal territories minister. He won the seat in 2013 with a 5,541 majority against Husam Musa who was then with PAS.
Tengku Adnan, popularly known as Ku Nan, is a three-term rep and is also the current Umno secretary-general.
Abdul Rashid, 76, led the Election Commission from 2000 to 2008 and joined Malay rights pressure group Perkasa in 2003 after which he was appointed vice-president.
In his inaugural speech upon joining Perkasa, Abdul Rashid reportedly admitted that three redelineation exercises which he oversaw when in the EC had ensured that Malays remained in power.
The first three Bersih protests calling for electoral reform had also occurred during his time helming the EC. - Mkini
