DAP's decision to use Pakatan Harapan's common logo for GE14 is not tantamount to the party joining PKR, said state party chief Chow Kon Yeow (above).
"It is just for election purposes. We are still DAP candidates using a Harapan common logo which is the blue eye," Chow, who is a state executive councillor, told reporters in George Town today.
"We do not see that this as contradicting the anti-hopping law as we are not changing parties but just using a common logo endorsed by the Election Commission," he added.
Concerns were raised on the common logo use as the Penang legislative assembly had passed a law prohibiting elected representatives from one party joining another post and pre-polls.
DAP deems the common logo move as similar to PSM's Sungai Siput MP Dr D Jeyakumar contesting under a PKR ticket in the 2008 and 2013 polls.
In Parliament, however, he is known as a PSM MP as this is his choice, said DAP secretary-general Lim Guan Eng (below) when contacted.
Harapan chairperson Dr Mahathir Mohamad is scheduled to officially announce the common logo in Pasir Gudang, Johor tonight.
As for the provisional dissolution of Bersatu imposed by the Registrar of Societies, Lim said it was "unfair but beneficial to BN".
ROS said Bersatu has 30 days to provide the necessary documents or face permanent deregistration although its leaders say the party has provided the paperwork in time.
Lim said the move was to handicap Harapan and give BN the upper hand to win the coming elections which are speculated to be in May before Ramadan which begins in mid-month.
"This is why BN is confident of winning big in this election but I believe the people are angry at the ROS' move which is not only undemocratic but cowardly," said the Penang chief minister.
"You tie our hands and legs, shut our mouths and then say this is a fair fight, it is unfair and this is why you must understand that we have decided to contest under a common logo," he added.
Lim said this was the first time in history when a party facing national polls has been deregistered by the ROS.
This was not only "cruel and extreme" but the party was also deregistered without a reasonable reason, he added.
"This only goes to show that the ROS is a tool of BN".
"We expect more of such actions from BN it is must win at all costs. There is no honour or principles and they do not care if they jeopardise the future of the country," he said. - Mkini
