GE14 | Dr Mahathir Mohamad is better off working in a 1Malaysia Clinic than contesting in Langkawi in the 14th general election, Abdul Hadi Awang said today.
Speaking at a function in Juru, the PAS president said he pitied the former prime minister for still being involved in politics at the age of 92.
The Pakatan Harapan chairperson, according to Hadi, was fond of "talking" and making allegations on various issues.
"He likes to talk about everything. Religion, he talks. Politics, he talks.
“In terms of religion – he cannot accept some things in the Quran, (says certain Islamic) laws cannot be used," he noted, adding that Mahathir is an old man who needs to be "schooled."
"By right, he – a doctor by profession – should work at a 1Malaysia Clinic to give free treatment to patients, and do charity.
"But he is contesting in the general election, I pity him," he said in a speech broadcast live on his official Facebook page.
Hadi also stressed that PAS will "not just let go” of the fact that Mahathir is representing Harapan in the parliamentary seat of Langkawi.
The Islamist party will battle both Mahathir and BN for the seat, by fielding a "strong, energetic" candidate to represent PAS and its coalition Gagasan Sejahtera, he added.
Last night, Harapan announced that Mahathir, its prime ministerial candidate, will contest the seat in GE14.
PAS is confident of playing ‘kingmaker' in the election, confirming that it would field candidates in over 150 of 222 parliamentary seats.
‘From football coach to player’
Speaking on Mahathir's choice to lead the opposition charge, Hadi likened it to a football coach being demoted to a player.
"He (Mahathir) used to be the captain of the Umno football team, before he was made the coach. When he was the captain, he spoiled Umno. Then he became the coach, it became even worse.
"Now Harapan made him a player. Pity him, a 90-plus-year-old coach being asked to play football. It should not happen," he said to a laughter from the crowd.
According to the PAS president, Mahathir should not have entertained requests from "kids and grandchildren" who asked him to contest in the election.
Hadi said that he did not mean to speak ill about Mahathir's candidacy, although the latter had said "many things about PAS," and stressed that he was merely offering his opinion.
"Journalists, please report properly," he added. -Mkini
