Sarawak DAP man slams Ku Nan’s take on Evangelicals

The recent statement by Federal Territories Minister Tengku Adnan Mansor branding the DAP as a chauvinist party and declaring Evangelical Christians as untrustworthy came under fire from yet another DAP party member.
Sarawak DAP Socialist Youth's publicity secretary Abdul Aziz Isa (above) told Malaysiakinitoday that he was flabbergasted by the “venomous remarks”made by the caretaker federal territories minister.
“As reported by the media on April 14, the Umno secretary-general declared that he respected all religions and had no problems with Catholics, but expressed distrusttowards the Evangelicals or 'New Christians'.
“This statement is uncalled for,” said Abdul Aziz who is also special assistant to Sarawak DAP chairperson Chong Chieng Jen.
He said: “As a Muslim who believes in freedom of religion in this country, I denounce Tengku Adnan Mansor for making untrue, divisive and offensive statements by calling DAP a chauvinist party and painting Christian evangelicals as untrustworthy people."
He said such baseless and sweeping remarks could undermine the sanctity and integrity of the church and the Christian community in Malaysia.
“Who is Tengku Adnan Mansor for making such remarks about the Christian community in Malaysia? He seems to have a holier-than-thou attitude,” he said.
Abdul Aziz pointed out that this is not the first time that Tengku Adnan Mansor made such unbecoming remarks regarding Christians in the country.
“On Feb 3, the caretaker minister had said Christians should not use the church to spread fake news and lies that put the federal government in a bad light,” Abdul Aziz pointed out.
He said the caretaker minister's consistency in putting the blame on Christians showed that he had ill-intention to cause religious tensions between the Muslim and Christians.
“As a caretaker minister, Tengku Adnan Mansor should do well in promoting interfaith harmony and showing respect for the constitutional rights of all Malaysians to practise their religion in peace and harmony in any part of the federation.
“As such, I echo the call made by my fellow comrade Hannah Yeoh that demands Tengku Adnan Mansor to unconditionally withdraw his offending remarks and apologise to the Christian community in Malaysia to prove his true respect for freedom of religion.
“He should make this apology sincerely and promise not to repeat remarks that will hurt the feelings of our fellow Christian community in Malaysia,” he added. -Mkini
