Khairuddin reveals himself as Amanah member, Jasin candidate

GE14 | Citizens Declaration movement coordinator Khairuddin Abu Hassan today confirmed that he is now an Amanah member and will contest the Malacca parliamentary seat of Jasin in for 14th general election.
While no formal announcement has been made by Amanah leaders, Khairuddin himself confirmed the matter when met by Malaysiakini at the party's headquarters in Kuala Lumpur today.
"Insya Allah I will carry out the responsibility to the best of my ability to capture Jasin," said the former Batu Kawan Umno deputy division chief.
Previously, Khairuddin had a brief stint with Bersatu, before he left to eventually lead the Citizens Declaration movement.
"I want to do all I can to contribute one seat for Amanah and Harapan in this GE14. It is not impossible because we can already sense the sentiment on the ground in Jasin.
"Coupled with the strong cooperation among Harapan parties, I am very confident that Insya Allah we will capture Jasin," said the Penang-born politician, who is known to be a loyalist of Pakatan Harapan chairperson Dr Mahathir Mohamad.
While Khairuddin admitted that his political comeback has been kept under wraps so far, the matter was revealed today, as he had earlier attended a briefing by Amanah president Mohamad Sabu for all of the party's GE14 candidates.
Malaysiakini understands that the briefing, which lasted for about two hours, was attended by the majority of Amanah’s 27 candidates for parliamentary seats, and over 100 candidates for state seats.
Aside from the party’s deputy president Salahuddin Ayub, vice-president Mujahid Yusof Rawa and communications director Khalid Samad, other incumbent Amanah lawmakers present today include Sepang MP Hanipa Maidin, Pokok SenaMP Mahfuz Omar and Hulu Kelang assemblyperson Saari Sungib.
Notable absences, meanwhile, included Amanah Wanita chief Dr Siti Mariah Mahmud and son of the late PAS spiritual advisor Nik Aziz Nik Mat, Nik Omar.
Nik Omar has been heavily tipped to contest against his own brother Nik Abduh for the Chempaka state seat.
It is understood that Siti Mariah has made way for Mat Sabu to contest her Kota Raja parliamentary seat, while her own speculated candidacy in the Seri Serdang state seat is currently being finalised.
Seri Serdang is among the six state seats in Selangor with a candidate yet to be announced by Harapan. - Mkini
