Muhyiddin to seek new mandate in Pagoh under new flag

GE14 | Under the banner of BN and with the might of the federal government behind him, Muhyiddin Yassin had managed to win the Pagoh parliamentary seat seven times with solid majorities, all above 12,000 votes.
But Muhyiddin will face a new challenge in the 14th general election, as he seeks a new mandate as a member of the opposition pact Pakatan Harapan.
The Bersatu president’s widely expected move to defend Pagoh was confirmed by the party's Johor secretary Osman Sapian tonight.
"Yes, definitely," Osman told reporters when met in Johor Bahru. The official announcement is expected to be made on April 19 in Pagoh.
A former deputy prime minister and Johor menteri besar, Muhyiddin has built a strong legacy in Pagoh, and is remembered as the man who used his influence to transform the constituency into a northern education hub for Johor through Bandar Universiti Pagoh.
The new township has attracted three universities and one polytechnic college, namely the International Islamic University of Malaysia, Universiti Tun Hussein Onn, Universiti Teknologi Malaysia and Politeknik Tun Syed Nasir Syed Ismail.
He has also broken new ground for the opposition in Pagoh, where they are now able to hold ceramah and attract sizeable crowds.
Muhyiddin was axed as deputy prime minister in July 2015 for being critical of caretaker prime minister Najib Abdul Razak's handling of the 1MDB scandal.
He was sacked from Umno the next year, and later joined forces with Dr Mahathir Mohamad to form Bersatu.
Besides contesting Pagoh, Muhyiddin will also contest the Gambir state seat.
Bersatu's other candidates for Johor parliamentary and state seats will be announced on April 19, and will receive their surat watikah (authorisation letters) on April 25.
Osman said of the candidates, only seven are former Umno members, while 21 others are new faces to politics.
Bersatu will contest 10 parliamentary and 18 state seats in Johor. - Mkini
