PAS candidate expects Liow to lose Bentong because he 'hentam' Islam

GE14 | MCA president Liow Tiong Lai is expected to lose his Bentong parliamentary seat in the May 9 general election, according to PAS' candidate for the Pelangai state seat Abdul Hamid Bahatim.
Pelangai is one of the four state seats under the Bentong constituency.
Abdul Hamid claimed that Malay voters, who form a sizeable portion of the Bentong electorate, are upset with Liow over his remarks concerning PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang's motion to amend the Syariah Courts (Criminal Jurisdiction) Act 1965, or Act 355.
“The impact is huge. It is not only limited to Act 355, but also related to Islamic issues. They (Bentong residents) have made their objection (known) to Liow, but he does not care.
“He made a statement that he would resign as a minister if the PAS president tables the motion and if it is passed in the Dewan Rakyat.
“The issue now is not about him 'hentam' (hitting out) at PAS, but him 'hentam' Islam. The effect is great,” he told Ismaweb.
Abdul Hamid said that Liow had previously won the Pahang seat due to the support of Malay voters.
“Most of the votes he received came from the Malay voters. If (he) hopes for Chinese votes, there is no hope,” he added.
In the last general election, the MCA president won the seat with a wafer-thin majority of 379 votes.
In January 2017, right-wing Malay group Perkasa's Youth wing had demanded an apology from Liow over MCA's stand on Act 355.
Failing which, Perkasa Youth, which is known as Wira Perkasa, warned that it would field its own candidate in Bentong.
“If you fail to apologise, we from Wira Perkasa would declare that the Bentong parliament constituency and you as enemies of Islam,” Wira Perkasa Youth exco Burhanuddin Ruslan was reported as saying.
“We would launch a campaign to ensure that not a single Malay Muslim in Bentong votes for opponents of Islam,” he added.
Apart from MCA, other BN component parties such as MIC, Gerakan and those from East Malaysia also opposed the Act 355. - Mkini
